HDMI Cable Features Comparison

HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface and is most frequently used to transfer both high definition audio and video over a single cable.

It is a proprietary audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data from an HDMI-compliant source device, such as a display controller, to a compatible computer monitor, video projector, digital television, or digital audio device. HDMI is a digital replacement for analog video standards.

HDMI cables are the primary way to connect devices to a TV or home theater set-up. HDMI cables can pass video, audio, and limited control signals.

An expensive HDMI does not produce richer colours or crisper sound than the cheap versions. However, an HDMI cable made with better materials can be more durable and support higher bandwidth at longer distances.

Gold-plated connectors

Gold is one of the best conductive metals, and plating HDMI connectors in gold ensures maximum signal conductivity, as well as added resistance to corrosion for extended cable life. They have better shielding and are even more durable than regular HDMI cables. It is also true that the gold plated ends will not have the oxidation that may be found in regular HDMI cables.

Plenum-Rated Connectors

Plenum refers to the air-handling spaces in building construction above the ceiling. Some buildings have this kind of ceiling which qualifies as a plenum ceiling and all the cables that go through the ceiling must be plenum rated. Plenum-rated cables have a special insulation that has a low smoke jacket that burns slower in the event of a fire and emits less toxic smoke. Because these cables are built to a higher fire resistance standard, they are more expensive.

Refresh Rate - Refresh rate refers to the number of times in a second that a device retrieves data.

AWG or American Wire Gauge

It is nothing but a measure of wire thickness, which also dictates cross-sectional area. In an HDMI cable, it refers to the size of the conductors within the cable. With wire gauges, smaller numbers actually refer to larger wires. This means a 24 AWG cable has a thicker conductor than a 28 AWG cable. The benefit of a thicker conductor is the ability to effectively transmit an HD signal over longer distances.

1080p - 1080p refers to an HDTV format which has 1080 horizontal lines of resolution. The "p" stands for progressive scan. The traditional analog video uses an interlaced scan, which draws the odd lines, then even lines of each frame. Progressive scan draws all lines in sequence.
